Cartolina 18 December 2013

18 December: Robyn Black talks about her trip in Italy visiting Commonwealth War Cemeteries, as well as the Caserta Royal Palace, and having some adventures involving trains, hotels’ swimming pools, and language. This is the last programme for 2013: time to reflect on Cartolina’s 15 years: 390 programmes for a total of 95 hours of broadcast.... For some years now, Cartolina has gratefully received a Community grant from the Christchurch City Council, that enables us to produce the programme.

9 October: The Italian Film Festival 2013 may not go on in Christchurch, due to the pending assessment of Hollywood Cinema in Sumner, in renewed post-earthquake scrutiny. We hope for the best, and interview Festival director Tony Lambert.








23 October: Bala Patel is a retired gynecologyst, now full time painter. Bala travels to Italy often, to seek inspiration, and this is the recount of her last trip. For info on Bala’s work, just google Bala Patel Artist

The Italian architect Roberto Capocaccia is a keen singer of classic repertoire, and a lover of modern music. He tells about the career and life of the Italian singer and composer Umberto Bindi, and of the social and cultural landscape of Italy in the 50s and 60s. We play Bindi's most famous songs: Il nostro concerto, Riviera, Arrivederci in the first programme, and Vento di mare, La musica e` finita, Lasciatemi sognare in the second programme.

Rebecca Wilson (teacher) and Scott Kinley (principal) of the Bromley School are running a learning programme based on the Reggio Emilia approach.

They tell how this method worked for their school and how it’s being expanded to other schools. We play songs from the Zecchino d’Oro (children songs contest).

On the phone from Wellington, Carolina Izzo tells about her career as an art restorer in Italy and in New Zealand, where she worked for 6 years at Te Papa. Already dividing her time between her two studies in Auckland and Wellington, she’s just being assigned the task of restoring the dome of the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch.

Lucia Digirolamo is an Italian restorer presently in Christchurch. Lucia is specialized in stone, both statues and buildings, and is looking for work in this field. She tells about the surprising discoveries made while restoring the Basilica in Padua.

Italian Passports 15 May 2013



            The Italian Embassy in Wellington intends to send a staff member to Christchurch to take digital imprints of Italian citizens wishing to apply for a new passport in the near future. So instead of the extra expense of travelling to Wellington for this, it can be done in Christchurch.

            It is ESSENTIAL that anyone needing to avail themselves of this service get in contact with Valerie Mayer immediately by email (tmayer@snap.net.nz) or telephone (359-7372) with the name(s) of those who will be needing this service, as the Embassy hopes to do this early next week.

Father and daughter Davide and Chiara-Flora Bassignana, on the phone from Italy, introducethe much loved Italian singer-song writer Fabrizio De Andre`. In these two programmes they present his life, and his research in the Italian dialect repertoire. We play De Andre’s most famous and less famous songs




Our Lady of Christchurch 26 May 2013


You may remember back in 2011, during the earthquakes, there was a statue of Our Lady in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament which turned around 180 degrees to face the city. That statue was dubbed 'Our Lady of Christchurch' and that year and in 2012 processions were held in her honour. For this year's procession in honour of Our Lady, we would like to ex-tend an invitation to the Italian Community to participate The event will take place on Sunday the 26th of May at 2pm, at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral in Manchester Street.  Please feel free to email me at: br.clemens@the-sons.org We hope to see you there. 24 April: Manfredo Manfredini talks (in English) of his work done in Christchurch on the reconstruction post earthquakes. He was part of a research group based in the Christchurch Polytechnic of Technologies, whose final projects were presented in an exhibition. We play more music from the Wine Jazz Trio.

10 April: Auckland-based Italian architect Manfredo Manfredini debates the concept of a modern town, the effect of the Malls, and the social interaction that urban choices involve (in Italian). We play music from Luca Ciarla and Wine Jazz Trio (recorded live at Fringe Club, Hong Kong, during the festival ”Music, Wine and Molise”, 2004).

Wine critic and sound artist Jo Burzynska tells of her two projects: the first one, made using noises re-corded during the Christchurch February Earthquake in 2011. The second one, realized using noises recorded at a winery in Italy. These were then presented at a festival in Campania. We play extracts from both Bodywaves and Oenosthesia
