Cartolina 3, 12 & 30 December 2014

3 & 12 December: Francesco Melillo is an Italian musician, musicologist and historian. He plays guitar in a band called “Aut in Vertigo”, and their first CD has just been published. Francesco talks about their songs, and their attitude to music and to life in general. We’ll also learn what the name of the band stands for…

30 December: New Year’s resolutions. Who makes them? Who keeps them? We talk with some Kiwi and Italian friends, and play their favourite songs.

5 November: Italy in Antarctica. We talk with Head of Expedition Giuseppe De Rossi and Vilma Melchiori of the Antactic Technical Unit. They explain what is to be expected from this campaign, and how they personally relate to its demands.

19 November: traveling and studying in Italy. Maria Fresia takes her students to explore a part of Italy every year. This time it was the Veneto, that is, not just Venice!

8 October: The Italian Film Festival opens in Christchurch on 16 October at the Hollywood Cinema in Sumner. Festival Director Tony Lambert presents the films included this year: as rich and varied selection as ever.

22 October: HE the Italian Ambassador, Carmelo Barbarello, talks to Cartolina producers. Mr Barbarello, recently posted to New Zealand, is in Christchurch for the opening of the Antarctic season.

13 August: Pier Paolo Pasolini is the subject of a multi media exhibition that Cartolina co-producer Denis Walker has visited in Roma. We talk about Pasolini’s activity as a poet, a film director, and a communist philosopher. We play “Supplica a mia madre” and “Canto popolare”, as recorded by Pasolini himself, and we play “A Pa’”, the song dedicated to him by Francesco De Gregori.

Cartolina 7 May and 21 May: Nidi d’Arac is a music group from Salento, the south most part of Apulia. They present century-old folk songs, based on the tradition of the “tarantate”, women bitten by the tarantula, in a modern, almost acoustic style. Their haunting, hypnotic rhythms are unforgettable. The group featured in the last Womad festival.

Cartolina in April:

9 April: we talk with Carolina Izzo and Lucia Dori. Carolina, the head of the restoration project of the beautiful painted dome of the Isaac Theatre Royal, updates us on the current stage of the works, and why the canvas are in a boat yard in Sumner at the moment. Lucia is a renowned restorer from Florence, here to work on the same project. She’s left behind a Botticelli’s tondo, her latest work in Italy.

23 April: Pat Unger, the biographer of New Zealand painter Bill Sutton (who’s worked extensively in Italy), is updating her book for a new edition. She’s come across the name of a goof friend of Sutton’s in Italy, a Dr Padovan from Venice, and wondered if he was still alive. The search for information about Padovan has involved people on both sides of the Equator; this is the story.
