New committee and new meeting venue

The new committee elected at the AGM is:

Denis Walker (President)
Jan Tedesco (Secretary)
Philippa McLaughlin (Treasurer)

Committee members: Valerie Mayer, Wilma Laryn, Maria Fresia, Fiorenzo Peloso, John Pryor, Louise Easter, and new members Francesco D'Alo' and Glen Mosna.

The meeting venue for 2013 will be St. Ninian's Church in Puriri Street with the first monthly meeting in February.

November meeting - Alessandro Palermo "i lezioni da Darfield e L’Aquila"

Alessandro Palermo (University of Canterbury) will speak about "i lezioni da Darfield e L’Aquila."


The meeting will commence with the AGM and election of officers for 2011.

Cine Dante Thursday 27 May

This week's film is the acclaimed Il Divo, winner of the Jury Prize at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.

Paolo Sorrentino's original and witty film about Giulio Andreotti tries to anatomise the character and explain the longevity of a man who has been Prime Minister three times and emerged unscathed from no less than 26 separate court cases on charges that include corruption and Mafia involvement.

Before the screening of Il Divo come along to Dante Aperitivo between 7.45 and 8.15 for Italian conversation. All welcome.

Note : Metro's exclusive charge to us of $12 will apply, but the showing is a private one for members of the Dante Society, the Italian community and their friends.

Cine Dante - 25 March

This week's film is Caravaggio (2007) directed by Angelo Longoni. Described by IMDb as a glorious spectacle with a charismatic star (Alessio Boni), this is the first time it has been shown in Christchurch. 

Dante Aperitivo 7.45-8.15 pm with music from the period.

We had a stand at Culture Galore again this year. We offered coffee and panettone, and our Tarantella group made a public appearance on the main stage.

March meeting- John Anderson : Veneto beyond Venice

7:30pm, Wed. 8 July at the Linwood Community Arts Centre, corner Stanmore Rd & Worcester St.

John Anderson, an architect who has lived and worked for several years in Rome and travelled extensively in Italy over many years will give an illustrated talk about some of the places, landscapes and architecture of the Veneto region

With two Italian brothers in law, Andrea an architect and Stefano a biologist, John also takes selected small groups to interesting corners of Italy.

For supper we'll have a pasta to celebrate the start of this year's activities.

Cine Dante 2010

Cine Dante starts up again next week. We have a great series of films for you this year, beginning with Il senso del tatto (The Sense of Touch) starring Luca Zingaretti in his famous role as Commissario Montalbano. This is one of a series of films based on the novels of Andrea Camilleri and made famous on RAI, Italian television. It is set in Sicily and on the island of Levanza and concerns Montalbano’s investigations into a mysterious death. Wonderful scenery, great food and an excellent story line. If you don’t already know the Montalbano stories, you will immediately become addicted.

Dante-Befana - the dinner to know each other

On 6th January Italians celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. with a visit of la Befana and a convivial dinner together. This year the Società Dante Alighieri invites you to come along to a get-to-know you dinner at Tutto Bene Restaurant 192 Papanui Rd, Merivale, on 6th January from 6.30pm. La
Befana will be present with calze di dolci for the children (and perhaps also for those who once were children—if they are good!).

Places are limited to a total of 30 people (including children) attending, so let us know early to avoid disappointment. Come along and share in this evening of food and la Befana on 6th January, bring your children and grandchildren.

October meeting - AGM & Cine Dante

Our next monthly event is on Wednesday the 14th of October at the Metro Theatre, 105 Worcester St, Cathedral Junction.

We begin at 7.30 pm with some nibbles and then the AGM will take place at 8 pm. At 8:30 pm an Italian film, Marcello, Marcello with subtitles, will be shown in a theatre at the Metro. Marcello Marcello will inaugurate Cine Dante, our new Italian film night.

The Metro's usual charge of $13.50 will apply but the showing is a private one for members of the Dante Society, the Italian community and their friends before the film is released generally. August meeting - Due prospettive: Louise Easter e Adrienne Dempsey

Louise Easter and Adrienne Dempsey talk about their time in Rome and Siena, as winners of scholarships of the Dante Literary Competition.   


Louise won the scholarship in 2007 and studied in Siena from 1 September to 28 September, 2008.
 
Adrienne won the scholarship in 2008 and studied in Rome from 5 January to 27 February.

July meeting - Ewan Mitchell “8000Km through Italy"

8000 km—that’s the distance that Ewan drove in six weeks during his latest trip in Italy. This indicates his love for the Country and its cars, of which he’s a collector. Plenty of pictures to accompany this unique travelogue. Ewan is the owner of Mitchelli’s Café in Ash Street, where he has recreated the ambience of an Italian café.

Italiantarctica 25 June

This documentary is co-produced by PNRA, the Italian National Programme of Research in Antartica and RAI, and is screened for the first time in New Zealand.

May meeting - Terence Dobson "Non troppo"

Terence Dobson will talk about Italian film animation: what it is and what has been done, and show some film clips.

Terence teaches film animation in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at the University of Canterbury. He is a published author of works on film animation and the films of Bhutan.
